  • Grooming

You should always try to acquire animals which have been registered by the breeder in an accredited feline association, in your country or abroad. The transfer of ownership certificate provided by the breeder gives you the guarantee that you are purchasing a breed and it must be submitted to the corresponding association to get the ownership certificate at your name.

The Persian, Exotic and Himalayan breeds are ideal pets for children because of their temperament. Children must bear in mind, however, that they are not toys but living beings who need to be taken care of and must be treated with love and respect.

  • Characteristics of the Persian

This breed has a particular appearance for a feline: a powerful cobby body on short and rectilinear legs; a wide and round head with a tiny nose, very expressive eyes and a highly marked stop. A distinctive feature is their splendid coat: long and silky, thick and glossy, which makes them the king at cat shows.

The excellent temperament of the classic Persians fits perfectly in their roundness and in the smoothness of their fur. They are peaceful cats, tender and affectionate, virtues which have made them popular. However, one should not trust their impecable manners, sophisticated and refined: they are true cats, playful, independant and good hunters if they grab an opportunity. If you find the Persians placidity somewhat boring, the red point Himalayans can be a better choice: they are far more vivacious due to their siamese genes. If you prefer a cozy teddy bear who will spend the day on your lap asking to be stroked, then, the short-haired Exotic is the ideal one.

    Brief historical outline

Their name refers to one of their ancestors, the Turkish Angora, who is responsible for the famous long-haired fur gen. As the Angora comes from the border between Turkey and Iran, it is perfectly understandable that it is called Persian, chosen to promote the breed type that derives from it.

The Persians, created in the XIX century, are a product of the British breeders, who worked with their home Angora population combining its selection and consanguinity with various blood types from European cat breeds.

In the United States, the first breeds were introduced at the end of the XIX century. The breeders worked hard to improve on the fur and to seek an extremely brevilineal type, especially of the head.

Breeders and judges have taken part in a controversy since then: some in favour of the English type and others supporting the American one. The breeders prefer pure Persians with fur quality, colour quality, and no anomalies.

  • What do your new Persian pets need?

    Sand box:

A sand box and cat litter (we recommend you to use clumping litter). Keep the box and the cat litter clean, remove the faeces as soon as possible, clean and disinfect the recipient thouroughly to prevent odours, or diseases in your cats. If you have more than one cat and one of them gets sick, take the precaution of keeping it apart from the rest with a sand box for itself until it recovers.

    Bowls:

Two dishes: one for food, one for water. The ones made of plastic or stainless steel are easy to clean. We recommend the latter since they are the easiest to clean and they prevent the formation of mould in the water.

    Bed:

Your cats will lie down wherever they want. Although it is not necessary to buy expensive baskets, they do need a hiding place far from draughts, where they can feel safe and comfortable.

    scratching post:

Kitties love sharpening their claws: teach them to use a tree, a wooden post or a scratching post. It is recommendable to buy special nail clippers for cats to cut their claws periodically.

    Cat toys:

Toys are very important for the well-being of your cat. They do not have to be expensive. An aluminium foil ball or the ones with little bells inside, a piece of string with something attractive tied to it, or anything that gives off smells (filled with catnip) are ideal toys for cats.

    back
  • Taking care of your cats

    General appearance:

Healthy little cats have a shiny and silky coat; and limpid eyes, with no sleep. A kitten's body is strong but not stiff. A flaccid or stiff body, or a swollen belly, are often a sign of illness.

Healthy and well cared for kittens will have their anal area clean, never matted. The long-haired breeds should have the area trimmed a little to prevent the faeces from sticking if they happen to be soft due to diet.

Kittens who have good health are active and playful but they also like to sleep, what makes them quite idle.

    Eyes:

Runny eyes are typical. The transparent tears become rusty in contact with air and that is the rusty colour usually seen on each side of the nose. It can be removed by using some absorbent cotton moist with tepid water. It is advisable to do this procedure periodicaly to prevent accumulation and spoiling your cat's appearance.

    Ears:

The inner ears must be perfectly clean and odourless. The animals who constantly shake their head or scratch themselves all the time may have parasites. If they have cerum in excess and it is dark, they may be having mites. You should contact your veterinarian in these cases.

  • Taking care of your cats

    Fur:

The fur must be clean, silky, with no tangles. To maintain the Persian and Himalayan's coat in all its splendour, it is important to brush them at least two or three times a week. Check that no tangles are formed. A good brushing every day will be enough to maintain the coat in good condition. If your cats are Exotic Persian, they will need to be brushed all the same: as they have a double coat, the coat will look matted if the shedded hairs do not fall off.

    Fleas:

Flea control is very important especially in kittens. Too many fleas may cause skin problems and anemia, which can affect their health seriously, even to adults. It is recommendable to apply a flea topical product, at least once a month, if necessary. However, this is generally not enough, to eradicate them completely you should use a product that acts on the household as well

Bear in mind that if your cats have fleas, they will probably have the parasite called tapeworm. You will spot it easily in the faeces, in the shape of white rice grains. Do not panic, it is very easy to eradicate. Ask your veterinarian for the appropriate medicine and take all the necessary measures to eradicate the fleas.

    Bathtime:

If you brush your cats every week, bathing them once a month will be enough. There are different kinds of feline shampoo according to their skin, fur type and colour.

We recommend you to contact a reliable feline stylist to treat your cat to a deserved grooming session.

  • Diet

    Water:

Clean and fresh at all times

    Dry cat food:

    Premium, always.

    Remember:

    • The kind of cat food must be appropriate for each stage of your cat's life.
    • Dry cat food ensures appropriate nutrition for your cat and it is far more practical for you.
    • Carton milk may cause dhiarrea.
    • Low quality cat food causes severe illnesses, like Feline Urinary Syndrome.

    back
  • Health care

    Deworming and vaccination:

Kittens must be dewormed as many times as required within 15 - 21 days after birth. Discuss with your veterinarian an antiparasitic application plan for your kitten or adult cat.

They must be vaccinated twice within their two and four months of age with two doses of the feline distemper vaccine: the first after the kitten has turned 60 days of age; the second, three or four weeks after the first one. This vaccine is given again once a year.

After these, a dose of rabies vaccine is essential, and it is annual as well. Cats are never vaccinated if they have a cold, an eye condition, symptoms of temperature, dhiarrea, lethargy or any other sign that denotes a change in their usual behaviour.

When in doubt, always contact a reliable veterinarian.
